Set up the scope, focus the signal and understand every control in NopeScope.

Contents

NopeScope is a zero-latency analysis plug-in for inspecting a signal without changing it. Its Scope view combines waveform and frequency-layered displays, sidechain comparison, range audition and switchable Peak, RMS and Crest metering in one window.

Important: NopeScope passes the input through unchanged. Its graphs and monitoring controls are analysis tools, not audio processing.

Getting started

  1. Insert NopeScope on the track, bus or master channel you want to inspect.
  2. Start playback in your DAW.
  3. Choose Wave for the complete waveform or Spectral for separate low, mid and high time-domain layers.
  4. Select Peak, L, R, M or S as the input component.
  5. Set the time window with Tempo on for musical divisions or off for milliseconds.
  6. Route a sidechain when you need a direct timing or shape comparison.
  7. Narrow Range and enable Listen only when you need to audition a specific frequency region.

For the most readable display, start with the full frequency range and a short time window. Narrow the range only after you identify the area you want to inspect.

Installation

Install the VST3 from the current NopeScope package, then reopen your DAW. If NopeScope is missing from the plug-in browser, run the DAW's plug-in rescan and confirm that it scans the standard VST3 location.

The standalone build can be used when you want to inspect an audio input without opening a DAW.

Signal flow

NopeScope keeps analysis and audio output separate:

Path Purpose
Main input The signal inserted on the track or bus.
Sidechain An optional second signal used for visual comparison. It does not replace the output.
Output A zero-latency pass-through of Main unless Listen is temporarily auditioning a selected range.

Changing the visible input component or freezing the graph does not change the normal output signal.

Scope view

The Scope view displays the signal over time. Use it to inspect transients, periodic movement, channel relationships and the shape of material that is difficult to judge from meters alone.

Zoom the time axis up to 64× and pan with the scrollbar to inspect a short event without changing the captured audio. The inspector reports time and level at the cursor, including the peak at a clip marker. Display settings are saved with the plug-in state where the host supports normal state restoration.

Wave and Spectral

Wave shows amplitude over time. Use it to inspect transient shape, timing, polarity and channel relationships.

Spectral remains a time-domain scope; it is not a spectrogram or a conventional frequency spectrum analyzer. It separates the selected input into three waveform layers:

  • Low: below 250 Hz.
  • Mid: 250 Hz to 3 kHz.
  • High: above 3 kHz.

Each layer can be shown or hidden, with at least one kept visible. Sidechain comparison is available in Wave mode; Spectral focuses on the frequency-layered Main display.

Sidechain comparison

Route a signal to NopeScope's sidechain input in the DAW, then choose SC in Compare. Sidechain comparison is unavailable when the host has not supplied that input.

  • Overlay places Main and Sidechain on the same time axis and gain scale. Use it to see alignment and shape differences directly.
  • Split gives Main and Sidechain separate lanes while preserving their timing relationship. Use it when overlapping waveforms are difficult to read.

Changing Compare or the layout never changes the audio output.

Time and playback

Time sets the visible capture window:

  • With Tempo enabled, choose 1/16, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2 or 4 as a host-synchronized musical window.
  • With Tempo disabled, choose a free window from 1 to 5000 ms (1 ms to 5 s).

With Live off, capture follows DAW playback and begins a new pass after transport start or seek. With Live on, capture continues from incoming audio independently of the DAW transport state.

With Scroll off, each pass is redrawn inside a stationary window. With Scroll on, history moves continuously across the display. Choose a short window for individual transients and a longer one for envelopes, repeated patterns or timing comparisons.

Freeze, Hold and Reset

  • Freeze stops visual updates without stopping or muting the audio. Unfreezing starts a new pass.
  • Hold keeps the previous completed pass dimly behind the current one. Hold is unavailable in Scroll mode.
  • Reset clears the current capture, held pass and retained meter state.

Input component

The input selector changes the signal component shown by the scope:

  • Peak follows whichever channel has the greater absolute amplitude at each sample while preserving its polarity.
  • L and R isolate the left or right channel.
  • M shows information common to the left and right channels.
  • S shows their difference, isolating stereo-only information.

Frequency range and Listen

The Range control limits the visible and auditioned signal to the selected frequency region. Drag either endpoint to resize it, drag the range itself to move it, or reset it to return to the full range.

Listen temporarily auditions the selected range. Use it to confirm what a visible event contains before making an EQ or arrangement decision. Turn Listen off when you return to normal monitoring.

Gain and display

Gain changes the graph's visual scale from −24 to +24 dB and defaults to 0 dB. It does not add gain to the plug-in output or alter meter values.

Use the window-size option in the menu when the interface needs more or less screen space. Display changes do not affect the analyzed audio or saved meter values.

Peak, RMS and Crest meters

Click the vertical meter to cycle its readout:

  • Peak shows the current peak level.
  • RMS shows average signal energy.
  • Crest shows the difference between peak and RMS, giving quick context for transient contrast.

The meter follows the source displayed in its lane. Reset clears retained meter values together with the Scope capture.

Troubleshooting

The graph is empty

Confirm that the track is producing audio, the plug-in is enabled and the selected input component contains signal. If Sidechain is active, verify the DAW's sidechain routing.

The graph no longer moves

Turn off Freeze. If the display still appears stationary, confirm that playback is running and that the selected time mode matches the material.

Hold is unavailable

Turn off Scroll. Hold compares completed stationary passes and is intentionally disabled while history scrolls continuously.

Sidechain is unavailable

Create a sidechain send in the DAW and select NopeScope as its destination. Sidechain setup differs between hosts; some standalone configurations do not expose a sidechain input.

Monitoring sounds filtered

Turn off Listen. The frequency-range audition is intentionally temporary and should not remain enabled during normal monitoring.
